Empress Ki (2013-2014) [Gi Hwanghu] is a South Korean historical drama television series starring Ha Ji-won as the titular Empress Ki and Ji Chang Wook and Joo Jin Mo. It aired on MBC from October 28, 2013 through April 29, 2014.
Empress Ki was a hit both domestically and overseas. The series won the Golden Bird Prize for Serial Drama at the 9th Seoul International Drama Awards. Ha Ji-won also won the Grand Prize at the MBC Drama Awards for her performance in the series.
Genghis Khan built an empire that spanned vast regions in East Asia and East Europe which included the Yuan Dynasty. One woman held immense power for 37 years in the Yuan Dynasty, in spite of that era’s class system which restricted women. Empress Ki was not a Mongol or of Han Chinese descent. She came from Goryeo, a small kingdom in the Far East. She was taken to Mongol against her will as a tribute or Gungnyeo (palace woman) but she overcame her lowly status to becoming he Emperor’s first concubine and his primary empress.
Empress Ki (Ki Seung Nyang) is the fiancée of Wang Yu, the King of Goreyo (Joo Jin-mo), but is sent to Yuan Empire as a tribute and becomes the first concubine and primary empress of Toghon Temür, the Emperor of Mongol Empire, (Ji Chang-wook). Empress Ki tells the story about the deep love the Emperor had for Lady Ki and depicts her loves and political ambitions.
