My ID Is Gangnam Beauty (2018) [Nae aidineun gangnammi-in] is a South Korean television series starring Im Soo-hyang, Cha Eun-woo, Jo Woo-ri and Kwak Dong-yeon. It is based on the webtoon of the same name published in 2016 by Naver WEBTOON. The title of the webtoon and of the TV series alludes to the Korean word gangnammi-in (Gangnam beauty), which is a derogatory term in South Korea for people who look like they’ve gone through numerous plastic surgeries to attain the beauty they desire.
The series premiered on JTBC on July 27, 2018 and ran through September 15, 2018. My ID Is Gangnam Beauty was praised for its portrayal of issues afflicting South Korean society, particularly on its superficial beauty standards and discrimination on the basis of physical appearance.
My ID Is Gangnam Beauty is about a college student, Kang Mi-rae (Im Soo-hyang) who decides to have plastic surgery after years of being bullied because of her looks. The surgery seems to be successful, however, as her life at the university unfolds, her decision backfires and the pressures of being a “pretty girl” get worse and worse. Soon she is ridiculed for her artificial look and tagged as a “Gangnam plastic surgery monster”. In the process of trying to recover her self-esteem, Mi-rae gets to know a college classmate, Do Kyung-seok (Cha Eun-woo), who was also her former middle school schoolmate.
