SKY Castle (2018-2019) [SKY Kaeseul] is a South Korean mystery drama television series starring Yum Jung-ah, Lee Tae-ran, Yoon Se-ah, Oh Na-ra and Kim Seo-hyung. It aired on JTBC from November 23, 2018 through February 1, 2019.
SKY Castle is the second-highest-rated drama in Korean cable television history. The drama received positive reviews from critics and won multiple awards, including four at the 55th Baeksang Arts Awards.
Wealthy residents of Sky Castle do their best to control the lives of their children and face consequences.
SKY Castle is a satirical drama that looks closely at the materialism of upper-class Korean parents who have no qualms about controlling the lives of their children to secure the future success of their families. They will use any means possible to get what they want, even destroy the lives of other peoples.
The drama revolves around the lives of housewives living in a luxurious private residential area called SKY Castle in suburban Seoul. The community is made up of wealthy doctors, professors and other high class individuals. The competition is steep and wives are determined to make their husbands more successful and they raise their children as though they are princes and princesses. Staying on top requires their children to be top students and to go to top universities and they are willing to do anything to accomplish their goals, including spending billions of won on hiring coordinators for college entrance exams.
Han Seo Jin, Noh Seung Hye, Jin Jin Hee, and Lee Myung Joo all live with their families in SKY Castle.
One day, Lee Myung Joo unexpectedly commits suicide following her son’s acceptance into Seoul National University as a medical student. The community is shocked and her remaining family quickly moves out of SKY Castle. However, the residents are even more shocked when the inferior family of Lee Soo Im move in. Once in the community, Lee Soo Im attempts to help the overly pressured children of the neighborhood. She also begins to challenge the other women of SKY Castle, while continually questioning the ways she is supporting her step-son. During all this she is working to uncover the truth about what happened to Lee Myung Joo’s family and to determine their relationship to the grade coordinator, Kim Joo Young.
